Another one of our super stockists is Spectacle Emporium in Kings Heath, Birmingham. The store was opened in November 2015 and is run by the incredibly passionate Janan Choudhury – with whom we sat down with to ask a few questions….
How did you find out about Kirk & Kirk, what drew you to the brand?
I was looking for brands that were expressive, effervescent and unique! Brands that dared to do more than mere black and tortoiseshell. I wanted the store to be more than just mainstream, a place where you could find a pair of spectacles that became a conversational piece over dinner. It didn’t take long for my eyes to fixate on the Kaleidoscope collection. The vibrant colours and the way it catches the light is second to none.
Other than Kirk & Kirk, what are your favourite brands that you sell in the store?
I can’t get enough of Campbell Marson, a little-known London-based manufacturer that produce the most stunning wooden eyewear. The finish reminds me of the interior of luxury cars.
Tell us more about your store and its ideology.
We unashamedly celebrate all that’s great about independent creativity and design. You see, independence is more than just a word on the tip of the tongue, independence is our philosophy. It’s ingrained. It’s supporting brilliant individuals who want you to experience craftsmanship and to share a good story.
What is your favourite thing about working in this industry?
The buying! I am a self-confessed eyewear shopaholic and struggle to keep my passion in check!
Lastly, tell us something special you’ve done in your store recently.
The past couple of months in the UK have been turbulent, with terrorism incidents seemingly occurring on a weekly basis. I wanted to share with the locals that this brutality was not from Islam, so I decorated the shop front with the Taj Mahal and Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat. The response from the community was profound! We’d share hugs with passer-by’s and onlookers. Love is a powerful thing.
